Supreme Court precedent takes down b-ball court prayer (July 1, 2013)

The Freedom From Religion Foundation prevented future teacher-led prayers from plaguing a Kentucky school district after a basketball coach led a pregame prayer circle.

FFRF Senior Staff Attorney Rebecca Markert contacted the two school district superintendents responsible for Monticello High School on July 1. She requested they respect Supreme Court precedent that has struck down teacher-led prayer multiple times.

ā€œThe District must educate [the coach] and all District employees that they may not lead, encourage, or participate in student prayer,ā€ Markert wrote.

A counsel for the Kentucky Department of Education responded to FFRF on July 1. She instructed the school district staff not to participate in student-led prayer or lead prayer themselves.

ā€œIt is our hope that the separation of church and state continue in all our school districts,ā€ the counsel wrote.
