Event Description

Open to the general public and FFRF members nationwide, hosted by Upstate New York Freethinkers–a chapter of FFRF, this special gathering combines deep American freethought expertise with top-tier cultural history.

The morning kicks off with an immersive musical welcome featuring secular compositions by FFRF Co-President Dan Barker, followed by an urgent mid-term election year dispatch from FFRF Washington D.C. Governmental Affairs Director Mark Dann on grassroots activism and combating Christian nationalism. Acclaimed author Kate Cohen (We of Little Faith) will introduce the day’s featured keynotes, including David Hoffman, PhD, author of American Freethought, and Jeff Ingersoll, presenting an exclusive spotlight on the historic Robert Green Ingersoll Birthplace Museum.

July 2026 [Date TBD] – Sam Grover to Speak at Ozarks Chapter Event on Arkansas Lawsuits and Christian Nationalism (Bentonville, Ark.)

The Ozarks Chapter of the Freedom From Religion Foundation will host FFRF Staff Attorney Sam Grover for a public presentation in Bentonville, Arkansas. The event location and date are currently to be determined. Please check this page for updates.

Grover will give a 60-minute presentation discussing two ongoing Arkansas lawsuits involving church/state separation, as well as the broader rise of Christian Nationalism and its implications for constitutional rights and secular government.

As a staff attorney for the Freedom From Religion Foundation, Grover works to uphold the constitutional principle of separation between state and church and regularly addresses issues involving religious entanglement in public institutions and government.

The event is open to the public and there will be a $5-$10 cover charge. No RSVP is required. Attendance will be in person only, and no virtual option will be available.

May 18, 2026 – Elizabeth Cavell to Speak on State/Church Separation Litigation (Skokie, Ill.)

The Freedom From Religion Foundation Metropolitan Chicago Chapter (FFRFMCC) is pleased to host a special speaking engagement featuring Elizabeth Cavell, deputy legal director of the Freedom From Religion Foundation on Monday, May 18, 2026, at the Skokie Public Library in Skokie, Illinois.

Cavell will present an overview of recent court cases involving state/church separation and provide attendees with an update on the current work of FFRF’s legal department based in Madison, Wisconsin. Her presentation will highlight ongoing constitutional challenges and the organization’s efforts to defend the rights of nonbelievers.

The event will take place from 6:45 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Skokie Public Library, located at 5215 Oakton St., Skokie, IL 60077. The presentation will last approximately one hour and will be followed by a 30-minute Q&A session. Light refreshments will be served.

November 19–21, 2026 – Dan Barker to Speak at 4th Latin American Freethought Meeting (Costa Rica)



The Freedom From Religion Foundation is pleased to announce Co-President, Dan Barker, will be a featured speaker at the 4th Latin American Freethought Meeting (“Encuentro Latinoamericano de Librepensamiento”), taking place Nov. 19–21, 2026, in Costa Rica.

The international gathering will be held at the National University of Costa Rica (Universidad Nacional de Costa Rica, UNA), with the opening session scheduled for 9 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 19, at the Clodomiro Picado Twight Auditorium. The three-day event will bring together freethinkers, secular activists and human rights advocates from across Latin America and beyond.

Centered on the theme “Ideas without borders, thought without limits, secularism and human rights,” the conference aims to foster dialogue on the importance of freethought, the defense of secular governance and the advancement of individual liberties throughout the region.

Barker, a longtime state/church activist, author and former evangelical minister, will join other speakers in addressing the role of secularism in protecting fundamental rights and promoting critical thinking. As co-president of Freedom From Religion Foundation, Barker has represented the organization at events worldwide, advocating for the separation of religion and government and the rights of nonbelievers.

The Freedom From Religion Foundation is a U.S.-based national nonprofit organization with more than 40,000 members, dedicated to upholding the constitutional principle of separation between state and church and educating the public on matters relating to nontheism.

The Latin American Freethought Meeting is open to the public, and organizers encourage participation from individuals interested in secularism, human rights and free inquiry.

August 21–23, 2026 – BAHACon 2026 Premier Conference to Bring Freethinkers Together in (Sarnia, Ontario, Canada)

BAHA (Bluewater Atheists, Humanists & Agnostics) will host its premier annual conference, BAHACon 2026, from Friday, August 21 through Sunday, August 23, 2026, at the Four Points Sheraton Hotel and Conference Centre in Sarnia/Point Edward, Ontario.

BAHACon 2026 will bring together atheists, humanists, agnostics and freethinkers from across Canada and the United States for a weekend of engaging presentations, community dialogue and social connection. The conference will feature 12 respected speakers offering thought-provoking talks on secularism, humanism and related topics.

The Freedom From Religion Foundation (FFRF), a national nonprofit organization dedicated to upholding the constitutional principle of separation between state and church, is a platinum co-sponsor of BAHACon 2026. FFRF works nationwide to defend the rights of nontheists and to educate the public on matters relating to freethought, making its partnership a natural fit for this event.

Organized by BAHA, a Canadian nonprofit committed to promoting reason, compassion and secular values, the conference also supports charitable causes, with all proceeds donated to local charities.

October 15–18, 2026 – Freedom From Religion Foundation 49th Annual Convention (Milwaukee, Wis.)

Registration is now open for the Freedom From Religion Foundation’s 49th annual convention, taking place mid-October in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. This year’s event will feature a dynamic lineup of activists, authors, educators and state/church advocates for a weekend of thought provoking programming.

The convention will be held at the Baird Convention Center, beginning Thursday afternoon, Oct. 15, with “early bird” workshops, registration and a complimentary welcome reception. The formal program will run Friday, Oct. 16 through Saturday, Oct. 17, followed by FFRF’s annual membership and state representatives meetings on Sunday morning, Oct. 18, concluding by noon.

Featured speakers include acclaimed novelist Percival Everett, podcast host Jennifer Welch, marriage equality plaintiff Jim Obergefell, civil rights leader Maya Wiley, and labor leader Randi Weingarten. Additional speakers include content creators Drew McCoy and Forrest Valkai. Attendees will also hear from award recipients and activists, including Peter Isley and Ibtissame Lachgar, among others. May 3, 2026 – Dan Barker to Speak at Triangle Freethought Society Program Meeting (Morrisville, NC)


Dan Barker, Co-president of the Freedom From Religion Foundation (FFRF), will be the featured speaker at the Triangle Freethought Society’s monthly program meeting on Sunday, May 3, 2026, in Morrisville, North Carolina.

Barker, a longtime secular activist and former evangelical minister, will speak as a special guest during the organization’s regular monthly gathering. The meeting will also include time for new business and community discussion.

The event will take place from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. at the Morrisville Historic Christian Church, located at 226 Church Street, Morrisville, NC 27560. The program meeting is free and open to the public, and all are welcome to attend and participate. See more details here.

April 19, 2026 – Anne Nicol Gaylor Legal Fellow Kyle Steinberg to Present at Minnesota Atheists Public Meeting (St. Paul, MN)

Kyle Steinberg, Anne Nicol Gaylor Legal Fellow at the Freedom From Religion Foundation (FFRF), will present at the Minnesota Atheists April meeting on Sunday, April 19, 2026, at the Merriam Park Library in St. Paul.

Steinberg’s presentation will focus on current trends in state/church litigation and how FFRF is actively responding to them. The talk will highlight ongoing legal challenges involving religious charter schools, legislative efforts to place the Ten Commandments in public schools, and FFRF’s increasing work in state courts.

The meeting will be held in a hybrid format, both in person and via Zoom, and is free and open to the public. The library will open at 1:00 p.m. for social time, followed by a brief business meeting from 1:30–1:50 p.m. The public presentation will begin at 2:00 p.m. and conclude at 3:30 p.m.

May 4, 2026 – Patrick Elliott to Speak at Minnesota Day of Reason at State Capitol (St. Paul, MN)

Legal Director Patrick Elliott of the Freedom From Religion Foundation (FFRF), will be the featured presenter at the Minnesota Atheists’ Day of Reason event at the Minnesota State Capitol Rotunda on Monday, May 4th from 1:00-2:30 p.m.

The annual Day of Reason gathering will bring together secular advocates, community members and legislators under the theme “Rally for Secular Government.” Speakers will address the importance of maintaining the constitutional separation of state and church and promoting evidence based public policy.

Elliott will discuss FFRF’s ongoing legal efforts to uphold secular government and protect the First Amendment rights of all Americans. Additional speakers, including legislators and secular advocates, will participate in the program.

The event will take place from 1:00 to 2:30 p.m. at the Minnesota State Capitol Rotunda in St. Paul, located at 75 Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr Boulevard., St Paul, MN 55155. The event is free and open to the public.

March 14, 2026 – FFRF Co-President Dan Barker will Speak on “The Battle of Church and State” in Austin, TX

Join Dan Barker, Co-President of the Freedom From Religion Foundation (FFRF), as he speaks at a public meeting hosted by the Austin Chapter of FFRF on March 14, 2026, in Austin, Texas.

Barker will present a talk titled “The Battle of Church and State,” examining the ongoing constitutional and cultural debates surrounding the separation of religion and government in the United States. Drawing from his experience as a former evangelical minister turned atheist activist and his decades of work advocating for secular government, Barker will discuss why maintaining a clear boundary between church and state remains vital to protecting religious freedom for all.

As Co-President of FFRF, Barker works to uphold the constitutional principle of separation between religion and government through education, advocacy, and legal action. During the event, he will share insights from FFRF’s work challenging church-state violations across the country and will engage with attendees during a discussion period.

The event will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 14, 2026, at the Little Walnut Creek Branch of the Austin Public Library, located at 835 W Rundberg Ln, Austin, TX 78758. The meeting is free and open to the public.

Attendees will have the opportunity to hear Barker’s perspective on current church-state issues and learn more about FFRF’s efforts to defend the First Amendment.

April 16, 2026 – FFRF Co-President Dan Barker to Participate in The Anatomy of Purpose Debate (Central Niagara)

Dan Barker, Co-President of the Freedom From Religion Foundation (FFRF), will participate in The Anatomy of Purpose, a live public debate exploring questions of truth, morality, and human purpose, on April 16 in Central Niagara.

The Anatomy of Purpose brings together two prominent voices who have traveled markedly different spiritual paths: Dan Barker, former preacher and current atheist, and Abdu Murray, former Muslim and now Christian apologist. Through a structured and open dialogue, the speakers will examine foundational questions about reality, good and evil, morality, and the meaning of human existence.

As Co-President of FFRF, Dan Barker will contribute to the evening’s conversation by offering a secular perspective on ethics, belief, and purpose, and by engaging directly with attendees during the live Q&A session.

The event will begin at 6:00 p.m. CT (7:00 p.m. ET), with doors opening at 5:30 p.m. CT (6:30 p.m. ET). The program will feature an opening introduction, a moderated discussion between Barker and Murray from 6:00–7:45 p.m. CT (7:00–8:45 p.m. ET), and a 45-minute live audience Q&A followed by closing reflections. March 25, 2026 – Sammi Lawrence to Address Freethinkers of Colorado Springs at University of Colorado Colorado Springs (Colorado Springs, CO)

Sammi Lawrence of the Freedom From Religion Foundation (FFRF) will present to the Freethinkers of Colorado Springs and their guests on Wednesday, March 25th, at the University of Colorado Colorado Springs.

Lawrence’s presentation will focus on combating Christian Nationalism in public education, examining how religious ideology is influencing public schools. The talk will address the importance of community advocacy in defending secular public education.

The event will begin at 6:30 p.m. and will be held in person at the University of Colorado Colorado Springs. It is open to members of the Freethinkers of Colorado Springs and their invited guests.

FFRF regularly works with local chapters and community groups across the country to educate the public about nontheistic viewpoints and to uphold the constitutional separation of state and church.

March 11, 2026 – Sammi Lawrence to Participate in Panel at University of Wisconsin Law School (Madison, WI)

Sammi Lawrence of the Freedom From Religion Foundation (FFRF) will participate in a panel and networking event hosted by the Women Law Students Association at the University of Wisconsin Law School on Wednesday, March 11th.

The event will bring together attorneys and current law students for a discussion on authenticity and identity in the legal profession. Panelists will share insights from their professional experiences, addressing how personal values, background, and identity intersect with legal practice, as well as offering guidance to students preparing to enter the field.

The program will begin at 12:00 p.m. and will be held in person at the University of Wisconsin Law School. The event is open to current law students and participating student groups.

FFRF regularly engages with student organizations and academic institutions to support conversations  about constitutional principles, professional ethics, and the role of personal conviction in the practice of law.

January 29, 2026 – Thomas Paine Memorial Association’s annual celebration of Thomas Paine’s birthday (Online) at 6 pm CST

FFRF is a proud co-sponsor of the Thomas Paine Memorial Association’s 2026 annual celebration of Thomas Paine’s birthday, an online event celebrating Paine’s life and legacy. The celebration will begin at 6 pm CST on Thursday, January 29, 2026.

Opening remarks will be given by Reps. Jamie Raskin and Victoria Spartz (with a special appearance from Benjamin Franklin portrayed by actor Brian Patrick Mulligan). The keynote speaker is acclaimed historian Jack Kelly, whose book “Tom Paine’s War” explores Paine’s experiences during the Revolution. Award-winning actor Ian Ruskin will perform a dramatic reading from “The American Crisis” synchronized with a slideshow. A veteran will talk, a video showcasing Thomas Paine’s Cottage in New Rochelle, N.Y., will run, there will be musical selections from The Crossing, and cosponsor messages of support.

The event will be co-hosted by TPMA President Margaret Downey and TPMA Board Member Christopher Cameron.
