The Freedom From Religion Foundation expressed dismay over a possible arson attack at Will Rogers Coffee Company early Wednesday in Hawkins, Texas, where FFRF has recently objected to a religious sign on city property. Wood County fire marshals are investigating. According to local news, both the exterior and interior of a small storage shed adjacent to the main building were damaged overnight.
It is FFRF's understanding that Will Rogers, owner of Will Rogers Coffee and mayor of Hawkins, has claimed that his business was targeted because of his support of the Christian message on the city's sign, which says "Jesus Welcomes You To Hawkins."
FFRF condemns this and any reckless and violent act. FFRF's peaceful purposes are to educate the public on nontheism, and uphold the constitutional principle of separation of church and state. FFRF's purposes can only be achieved by nonviolent, lawful means.
"Our legal work is about following the law, not breaking it," said FFRF Co-President Dan Barker.
The mayor apparently has been involved in a variety of local controversies. While deploring the violence whatever the cause, FFRF suggested it's premature to assume the motive before the investigation is over.
"No one should be targeted because of religion or irreligion. FFRF abhors all violence and hopes that those responsible are brought to justice," Barker added.
