Christian Prayers to Open City Council Meetings Illegal, Watchdog Charges
June 11, 2009 The Freedom From Religion Foundation, a national state/church watchdog based in Madison, Wis., recently sent strong letters of complaint over the illegal practice of routinely opening city council meetings with prayer. Letters went out to officials in three cities: Mayor Alan P. Krasnoff of Chesapeake, Va., Mayor Don Reimal of Independence, Mo., and Mayor Larry D. Hansen, of Lodi, Calif.

March 25, 2009 A 14x48-foot billboard bearing Charles Darwin's iconic image and the words "Praise Darwin: Evolve Beyond Belief" went up yesterday on W. 21st and Tyler Rd. in Wichita, Kansas. The billboard marks both the 200th anniversary of the birth of Charles Darwin, and the 150th anniversary this year of the release of Darwin's landmark work on evolution, Origin of Species.

March 9, 2009 Maybe the United States' new motto should be "In God We Distrust," if we go by the latest findings of the definitive American Religious Identification Survey: 15%, or 34 million adult Americans--that's one in five of us--are now nonreligious. The "Nones," as researchers are calling nonreligious Americans, have more than doubled our numbers since the 1990s.

FFRF's "Praise Darwin" Billboard Re-Posted in Columbus, Ohio
February 25, 2009 It's back! A billboard commemorating the February bicentennial of Charles Darwin's birth, which was stolen from its Clear Channel board in suburban Columbus, Ohio, has returned. Thieves would have required 32-foot ladders to access the high board. The billboard disappeared sometime after nightfall on Feb. 12, on the 200th anniversary of Darwin's birthdate.

February 9, 2009 The bicentennial of the birthdate of science great Charles Darwin this Thursday is being honored in Grand Junction, Colo., with a billboard placed by the Freedom From Religion Foundation, with help from its local members and Western Colorado Atheists and Freethinkers. The billboard just went up at 1713 U.S. Hwy 50 (facing south) early this week.

FFRF Goes After Wisconsin Technical Colleges for Violating Good Friday Court Order
January 16, 2009 (Madison, Wis.) The Freedom From Religion Foundation, which won a solid federal court victory in 1996 overturning a state law declaring Good Friday a state holiday, is lodging a complaint with the Wisconsin Technical College System, and 15 of the 16 public-supported technical colleges in Wisconsin over noncompliance with the Good Friday court order.
