An outspokenly secular member of Congress discusses on this week’s episode of the Freedom From Foundation’s television show how to defend our founding ideals in the dire times to come.
U.S. Rep. Jared Huffman is co-chair of the Congressional Freethought Caucus and the Stop Project 2025 Task Force. He’ll be a leading figure of opposition to President-elect Trump’s expected implementation of Project 2025, the Heritage Foundation-concocted theocratic policy blueprint. Huffman talks about how he and his allies are going to be standing up for the secular community and the separation of religion and government. Huffman represents California’s 2nd District, which is just north of San Francisco, and is also the only openly humanist member of Congress.
“Taking us well down the road to theocracy was a huge feature of Project 2025, and it did it in so many different ways,” Huffman tells “Freethought Matters” guest co-hosts FFRF Director of Governmental Affairs Mark Dann and FFRF Senior Policy Counsel Ryan Jayne. “When you think about the national abortion ban and women’s reproductive rights and the extreme provisions on that, when you think about a biblical definition of gender and family and all that means for LGBTQ equality and for transgender rights, it is all another step down the road to theocracy.”
