American secular voters are becoming a force. Secular voters sharply increased their share of the U.S. electorate to 17 percent by 2018: a massive 55 percent increase. The Freedom From Religion Foundation supports universal voting by mail because we want to see those numbers continue to climb. And that’s why we’re asking you to support it, too. After all, the nonreligious are 26 percent of the U.S. population, so we have secular muscle to flex.
Please contact your members of Congress and ask them to demand universal vote by mail in the next round of COVID stimulus funding. Doing so will save American lives. But vote by mail is also a secular issue for two basic reasons: It’s reasonable and it will help secular voters.
First, it is based on evidence, science, reason and compassion. These should be the basis for public policy. This will allow more people to vote, and to vote safely, even if this pandemic is still ongoing.
Second, we owe this to the next generation of freethinkers. Studies suggest that this will help younger voters cast ballots. Younger voters are largely secular. Nationally, 38 percent of younger Americans are nonreligious. This includes about 21 percent of younger Americans who are either atheist or agnostic.
The risks of universal vote by mail are not insurmountable, nor can they be compared to the risks of in-person voting during a deadly pandemic. Universal vote by mail will help secular voters. FFRF supports it. Please contact your members of Congress and ask them to support it too.
