Oklahoma elementary school stops showing Christian videos (May 8, 2013)

The Freedom From Religion Foundation enforced the First Amendment by stopping Verdigris Public Schools in Claremore, Okla. from continuing to air “Veggie Tales,” a proselytizing Christian TV show.

A concerned parent contacted FFRF after her first grade student watched “Veggie Tales” at Verdigris Lower Elementary. “Veggie Tales” shows are morality stories based on the Christian bible.

FFRF Staff Attorney Andrew Seidel contacted Verdigris Public Schools Superintendent Mike Payne in an April 30 letter requesting the public schools stop promoting specific religions, especially to six-year-old children. Seidel also requested the District stop advertising church events on its website and calendars.

Payne responded in a May 8 email that he had instructed District teachers to stop showing “Veggie Tales” or any similar religious videos to students. Payne also agreed the school will no longer post church events on their website and calendars.
