The Aloha High School (Aloha, Ore.) football team will no longer implement prayers in its pregame routine, thanks to a concerned student who reported this practice to FFRF Staff Attorney Andrew Seidel. Seidel crafted a letter to Superintendent Jeff Rose on Oct. 25, citing the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment as the primary reason why such coach-led prayers were unconstitutional.
“As a general matter, it is illegal for a public school to organize, sponsor, or lead religious messages at school athletic events,” noted Seidel.
The principal informed FFRF on Oct. 29 that the team has eliminated prayers and any faith-based rituals before games.
