FFRF pulls the plug on religious displays in California hospital (Sept. 17, 2012)

A public hospital in Hollister, Calif., will no longer allow Christian prayers and verses to be displayed on its walls, after a complaint by Freedom From Religion Foundation.

Hazel Hawkins Hospital formerly displayed Christian prayers, including a plaque entitled ā€œNurseā€™s Prayerā€ on the wall of the Medical Surgical Unit.

In a June 26 letter, FFRF Staff Attorney Stephanie Schmitt warned, ā€œGovernment-run hospitals have a constitutional obligation to remain neutral toward religion.ā€

On Sept. 17, FFRF received assurance from hospital management that they ā€œhave taken all appropriate actions to address the areas identified and respect constitutional rights of all employees.ā€
