FFRF removes “Smile! God loves you” from post office grounds (April 25, 2014)

A post office in Cleveland, Ohio will no longer display a “Smile! God Loves You” sticker after a local complainant contacted FFRF. FFRF learned that a placard was taped near the service counter in view of customers.

FFRF Staff Attorney Elizabeth Cavell sent a letter to the Post Office manager on April 17, explaining why the display is a violation of the U.S. Constitution, and should be removed immediately.

“By displaying a placard that says ’Smile! God loves you!’ on its grounds, your post office branch is illegally demonstrating a preference for religion.”

Cavell cited U.S. postal regulations which explicitly prohibit the display of religious symbols, other than stamp art, on postal property.

On April 25, the United States Postal Service replied by letter assuring FFRF that, “The ‘God loves you’ sticker that you mentioned in your letter has been removed.”
