The Freedom From Religion Foundation has persuaded a Texas high school to keep unconstitutional prayers out of its graduation ceremony.
A concerned parent contacted FFRF about Schulenburg High School’s intention to include a benediction and invocation each led by a student at its graduation ceremony. FFRF Staff Attorney Elizabeth Cavell contacted Schulenburg Independent School District Superintendent Walter Padgett on June 7. She requested the school remove the divisive prayers from the ceremony, and cited Supreme Court chapter and verse ruling such devotionals unconstitutional.
FFRF received a response from the District on June 11 that future graduations will have moments of silence, something that is inclusive of everyone, instead of student led invocations and benedictions.
