About the Freedom From Religion Foundation

The history of Western civilization shows us that most social and moral progress has been brought about by persons free from religion. In modern times the first to speak out for prison reform, for humane treatment of the mentally ill, for abolition of capital punishment, for women’s right to vote, for death with dignity for the terminally ill, and for the right to choose contraception, sterilization and abortion have been freethinkers, just as they were the first to call for an end to slavery. The Foundation works as an umbrella for those who are free from religion and are committed to the cherished principle of separation of state and church.

Freethought in Action: Celebrate Your Freedom Every Day

What does it really mean to live freely — and think freely?

At the Freedom From Religion Foundation, we believe that freethought isn’t just a label or philosophy. It’s a daily practice. It lives in our choices, our conversations, our curiosity — and in how we show up for our rights and values. That’s why we’re thrilled to introduce our newest initiative: Freethought in Action.

This isn’t about grand gestures or headline-making protests (though we’re fans of those too). Freethought in Action is about the small, intentional choices that, together, make a powerful impact. It’s a call to action — for every freethinker, skeptic, secular humanist, and ally to put their principles into practice, one day at a time.

Because Freedom Doesn’t Maintain Itself

Every day, we exercise freedoms that millions of people still fight for:

  • The freedom to question and dissent.
  • The freedom to believe — or not believe — without coercion.
  • The freedom to advocate for a government that remains neutral on religion.
  • The freedom to live by reason, compassion, and evidence — not dogma.

But those freedoms are never guaranteed. They exist because people like you and me choose to protect them.

Freethought in Action is about celebrating those rights — and ensuring they endure.

One Simple Act. Every Day.

We’ve created a full year of daily actions — small, achievable steps anyone can take to strengthen secular values and celebrate freedom of thought.

Some actions are personal:

  • Reflect on what freethought has meant in your own life.
  • Read a quote by a famous secular thinker.
  • Share a story of resilience after leaving religion.

Others are civic or social:

  • Vote in a local election.
  • Support a secular educator.
  • Challenge a moment of religious privilege in your workplace or school.

Every action, no matter how small, is a spark. And when thousands of us participate, those sparks light up a movement.

You can explore the full list [here], or sign up to receive weekly prompts by email. However you choose to engage, you’ll be part of something meaningful — something growing.

Why “Freethought in Action”?

Because it’s time to show the world that freethinkers do more than think.

We ask questions, we speak up, we challenge injustice — and we take action. This campaign reminds us that our identity as secular people doesn’t end at disbelief. It begins with courage, compassion, and community.

Freethought in Action is a way to live your values every day — not just in moments of crisis, but in moments of quiet clarity. In the questions you ask, the conversations you have, the votes you cast, and the values you uphold.

How to Get Involved

  • Explore the full calendar of daily actions below.
  • Follow us on social media and join the conversation using #FreethoughtInAction.
  • Become an FFRF member to help us fight for real change in courts, classrooms, and communities.

Let’s Turn Freethought Into a Force

Our freedoms are worth defending — not just with words, but with action.

So today, we ask:

What’s your Freethought in Action?

Choose one. Make it yours.

Then come back tomorrow and do it again.

Together, we’ll show the world what secular action looks like — thoughtful, powerful, and unstoppable.
