The Freedom From Religion Foundation stood up for a student at Sea View Elementary after the teacher promoted religion in the classroom.
The teacher at the Salton City, Calif., elementary school told students they were offending god when they used swear words that contained the word “god.”
FFRF Staff Attorney Andrew Seidel contacted the superintendent of Coachella Valley Unified School District, Darryl Adams, on May 3. “It is shocking that a person willing to ostracize a child could be entrusted with [his or her] education and development,” Seidel wrote. He emphasized religion should be kept out of classrooms because it is divisive, inappropriate and unconstitutional.
The District’s legal counsel responded on May 29 that the assistant principal met with the teacher. “Without delving too deeply into employer-employee confidentiality, suffice it to say that [the Assistant Principal] met with [the teacher] and appropriately handled the matter at that time,” the counsel wrote.
