The Freedom From Religion Foundation’s Maine chapter has erected a freethinking display in a park in the town of Fairfield amid religious exhibits.
A sign celebrating the Winter Solstice has been put up in Veterans’ Memorial Park in Fairfield, Maine, and is available to view until the New Year. FFRF thanks Maine Chapter President Ray Vensel for his work in putting up the sign. The display counters a nativity exhibit (which the town later categorized as “private”). When Vensel called the town manager to complain about the nativity scene, he was allowed to set up FFRF’s sign, as well. There is a menorah at the site, too.
The sign reads:
Celebrating the Winter Solstice
The Reason for the Season
The Maine Chapter of the Freedom From Religion Foundation
FFRF is thankful that secular advocates are willing to counterbalance religious signs during the winter season throughout the nation, including Maine.
“Not only does December hold the natural Winter Solstice, but also the Bill of Rights Day,” says FFRF Co-President Annie Laurie Gaylor. “The Maine chapter’s work is commendable, and we’re proud to be represented by them!”
The Freedom From Religion Foundation is a national nonprofit organization with over 40,000 members and several chapters across the country, including hundreds of members and a chapter in Maine. Its purposes are to protect the constitutional principle of separation between state and church, and to educate the public on matters relating to nontheism.
