The Freedom From Religion Foundation is proud to announce that Rep. Kevin Mullin, D-Calif., has joined the Congressional Freethought Caucus, demonstrating his commitment to the separation of state and church and freethinkers’ rights.
In addition to welcoming Mullin, FFRF expresses its appreciation to former Reps. Jerry McNerney, D-Calif., and Carolyn Maloney, D-N.Y., who left Congress in January, for their service in the caucus. Both members of Congress have been steadfast champions of secular values and the First Amendment. There are currently 16 members in the Congressional Freethought Caucus.
The goals of the caucus, which was co-founded and is co-chaired by Reps. Jared Huffman, D-Calif., and Jamie Raskin, D-Md.,are to:
- Promote public policy formed on the basis of reason, evidence, science and strong moral values;
- Protect the secular character of our government by adhering to the strict constitutional principle of the separation of church and state;
- Oppose government discrimination against atheists, agnostics, humanists, seekers, religious and nonreligious persons, and to champion the value of freedom of thought and conscience worldwide; and
- Provide a forum for members of Congress to discuss their moral frameworks, ethical values and personal religious journeys.
“We’re excited to welcome Rep. Mullin to the Congressional Freethought Caucus and extend our gratitude to Reps. McNerney and Maloney for their leadership and dedication to preserving the secular character of our government,” says Annie Laurie Gaylor, FFRF co-president.
The Freedom From Religion Foundation is a national nonprofit organization with approximately 40,000 members and several chapters across the country. It protects the constitutional separation between state and church and educates about nontheism.
