The Freedom From Religion Foundation’s “Freethought Matters” TV show this Sunday features the intrepid young student who initiated a West Virginia school walkout that’s led to an FFRF lawsuit.
Max Nibert, who is the principal student plaintiff in the newsmaking West Virginia case, appears on the show along with FFRF Senior Counsel Patrick Elliott, who explains the law. In early February, Nibert, a senior at Huntington High School in West Virginia, led a dramatic walkout at his school to protest an evangelical Christian revival that some of the students had been forced to attend. Since then, Nibert, who is nonreligious, has become a student plaintiff in a high-profile federal lawsuit that FFRF has filed on behalf of 11 parents and students in the district. Nibert will be accepting FFRF’s Richard and Beverly Hermsen Student Activist Award, a $5,000 prize, at its October convention in San Antonio.
“I have never been prouder of my peers than I am right now,” he tells “Freethought Matters” co-hosts Dan Barker and Annie Laurie Gaylor. “When ordinary citizens find their circumstances to be unfair, they change them. And that's exactly what we're doing today.”
