This week, the U.S. Senate will vote on the nomination of anti-LGBTQ, anti-choice extremist Matthew Kacsmaryk to a lifetime federal judgeship in the Northern District of Texas. Kacsmaryk, general counsel at the infamous First Liberty Institute, is a direct threat to the separation of state and church, Roe v. Wade and LGBTQ rights. He is categorically unfit for the federal bench.
Kacsmaryk and First Liberty are the fanatical vanguard of a concerted attempt to redefine “religious freedom” to mean that Americans may deny civil liberties to their fellow citizens on the basis of religion. The Free Exercise Clause of the First Amendment was not intended to be a weapon to allow religionists to impose their religion on others, but Kacsmaryk is committed to distorting this clause for exactly this purpose.
As Americans concerned with the creeping theocracy of the Religious Right, we must oppose these shocking nominations. All U.S. senators vote on judicial confirmations. In 2017, FFRF members joined a national outcry against disgraced judicial nominee Jeff Mateer, resulting in his nomination being pulled. Whether or not your senators are strong supporters of the separation between church and state, voicing your concerns about bad judicial appointments is worthwhile.
