This bill, known as H.B. 3114, prohibits federally funded child welfare service providers from discriminating against children, families and individuals based on religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or martial status. It is an important step in protecting the best interests of children while the Religious Right exploits every opportunity to implement discriminatory policies disfavoring certain adoptive families due to bigoted religious beliefs.
According to the Every Child Deserves a Family Campaign, there are more than 440,000 children in our foster care system, with over 120,000 of them waiting for a permanent family. Meanwhile, as part of its nationwide legislative push known as Project Blitz, the Religious Right has attempted to inject state legislatures across the country with legislation that protects publicly funded religious adoptive services’ right to discriminate against LGBTQ families and children.
