The Freedom From Religion Foundation set up a booth in early September at the annual Fighting Bob Fest at the fairgrounds in Baraboo, Wis., which honors the progressive ideals of Wisconsin statesman Robert La Follette–who happened to be a freethinker! That’s Annie Laurie Gaylor, Foundation co-president (left) chatting with Foundation volunteer and officer Phyllis Rose, who kindly helped staff the busy table.
The largest crowd to date, 7,000, was attracted by such speakers as peace activist Cindy Sheehan. In fact, that’s Cindy in conversation right behind Phyllis!
A view of the September 8 table. Due to the timing, the Foundation employed a 9/11 theme, “Imagine a world free from religion.”
The new “out of the closet atheist” baseball caps moved briskly on the bright day.
Foundation co-president Dan Barker displays the “No Gods No Masters” bumpersticker that was torn in two by a passerby at the fest. (Annie Laurie extracted $2 from her to pay for the damage.) In some 30 years of setting up promotional tables, FFRF has never before seen mutilation of its property! The incident helped sell out the remaining “No Gods No Masters” bumperstickers to the otherwise friendly crowd. The slogan was adopted by Catholic Church defyer and birth control proponent Margaret Sanger.
