The Freedom From Religion Foundation set up a promotional table at the fourth annual “Fighting Bob” Fest held in Baraboo, Wis., saluting the memory of Robert LaFollette. About 5,000 people showed up on Sept. 10.
LaFollette, a Wisconsin governor, founded the Progressive Party, what is now the Progressive Magazine, and promoted the “Wisconsin Idea.” LaFollette was also a freethinker. In his autobiography, he recalled the heady thrill of hearing 19th century agnostic orator Robert G. Ingersoll speak: “He liberated my mind. . . He was a rare, bold, heroic figure.”
