Nominations are being taken for two 2006 student activist awards offered through the Freedom From Religion Foundation.
For many years, Board member Richard Mole has generously underwritten the Ruth (Dixie) Jokinen Memorial Student Activist Award of $1,000.
It is traditionally bestowed at the national convention of the Freedom From Religion Foundation. Awardees have included high school activists who have protested religious commencements, refused to say the religious Pledge of Allegiance despite retribution, or started freethought clubs despite school censorship. Other high school or college awardees have been plaintiffs and instigators of state/church lawsuits. Expelled Eagle Scout Darrell Lambert was an honoree.
A California couple recently endowed the Thomas Jefferson Freethought Activist Award, also $1,000. This cash scholarship similarly recognizes exceptional activism and achievement by a freethinking student.
Foundation members wishing to nominate a student should include reasons, relevant background or documentation, and nominee name and contact information.
