FFRF Adds New Essay Contest for Grad Students!

The Freedom From Religion Foundation is pleased to announce it has added a third student scholarship, targeting graduate students as well as any students age 25 and older.

“Because of the state of the economy, we have increasingly received essay entries in our college competition from older or returning students,” said Annie Laurie Gaylor, Foundation co-president. “The Foundation is pleased to expand its 30-year scholarship support to provide scholarships to encourage and aid older freethinking students and graduate students.”

Eligible are graduate students, or currently enrolled college students age 25 or older, who are enrolled in a North American college or university through at least December 2010.

The topic of the debut competition:

“Why We Need to Get God Out of Government, or Keep Religion Out of Politics.”

First place is $2,000; second place is $1,000; third place is $500; fourth place is $300; and honorable mentions of $200 each will be offered at judges’ discretion.

The entrant should submit a 1,400- 1,600-word essay (typed, double-spaced, stapled), choosing his or her own title. Include a one-paragraph biography including age, hometown and state, year in school, college or university being attended, major or degree being earned and career interests. Provide both summer and fall 2010 addresses, phone numbers and e-mail addresses for notification.

Winners will provide an e-mailed version and photo suitable for publication with the essay. By entering, students agree to have their essays published in full or in part in Freethought Today and posted online at ffrf.org. All eligible entrants will be offered a book or Freethought Today subscription.

Winners will be announced by September. The Foundation does not accept faxed or e-mailed entries. Students are disqualified if they do not follow instructions.

Graduate essays should be postmarked no later than June 15, 2010, to the address below:
