On the latest episode of the Freedom From Religion Foundation’s “Secular Spotlight,” FFRF Legal Intake Assistant Daniel Dossey discusses his journey to deconversion.
Daniel shares his deeply personal journey out of evangelical Christianity. He recounts growing up gay in a conservative religious environment, the crushing fear of hell that fueled years of religious OCD, and how faith-based counseling failed to help. Through studying theology, confronting biblical contradictions and learning about religious trauma, Daniel ultimately deconstructed his beliefs and found relief, clarity and purpose in a secular life.
In the interview, Daniel shares an important discovery learned through his deconstruction journey: “It’s not even that I need them to understand why I left Christianity because they’ll believe what they want to believe, and for most people, they’re going to believe whatever fits into their preexisting narratives and worldview. But if they’re going to believe me on one thing, it’s that the peace that surpasses all understanding that supposedly God promises is something accessible to each and everyone of us — and is not dependent on religion.”
