The Alaska Legislature is considering a dangerous measure to undermine abortion rights and we need you to speak out against it.
The bill, SJR 4, would propose a constitutional amendment stating that “nothing in this Constitution may be construed to secure or protect a right to an abortion or require the state to fund an abortion.” This bill would ultimately make it easier for more abortion restrictions and for the state to ban abortion outright if Roe v. Wade is ever overturned, which many fear may be in the near future.
The bill begins the process of inserting into the state Constitution beliefs not based on science or morality, but on religion and so-called holy books. The Christian Right has been and remains the primary opponent to women’s reproductive rights.
The Alaska Senate Judiciary Committee will hold a hearing on SJR 4 on Friday, April 23, at 1:30 p.m. local time. Please use our simple, automated system to contact all members of the committee and urge them to vote no on SJR 4 and to prioritize the advancement of reproductive rights.
