Reject Iowa bill that would establish sexual identity registry

The Iowa Legislature is considering a shockingly abhorrent bill that would require Iowans to register their sexual orientation with the state — and face punishment if they deviated from their official status.

This bill, Iowa S.F. 2130, proposes that applicants for a marriage license in the state specify whether they identify as bisexual, heterosexual, homosexual, questioning or “unsure.” If an applicant gives the “wrong” answer for any reason, this mistake could be used against them in future divorce and custody proceedings. They would be held automatically liable for the dissolution of the marriage on the basis of “fraudulent concealment of sexual orientation.”

This proposal is both an obvious overstepping of government power and a shocking attempt to use the power of the state to impose Christian marital values on all Iowans.

As writer Val Wilde recently pointed out in a piece about this bill, “There’s something deeply dystopian about what will ultimately amount to a government list of Iowans’ sexual orientations.”

This bill is currently in front of the Iowa Senate Judiciary Committee.
