This week, Reps. Jamie Raskin, D-Md. and Mark Meadows, R-N.C., introduced in a bipartisan initiative House Resolution 512, a renewed effort calling for “the global repeal of blasphemy, heresy and apostasy laws.” The resolution specifically notes that “secularists” are frequent victims of such laws.
Blasphemy laws are still astonishingly common. More than 70 countries across many regions maintain these archaic rules, punishable by life imprisonment and death, as well as often violent extrajudicial retribution from other citizens. As FFRF has long pointed out, blasphemy is a victimless crime, but blasphemy laws create many innocent victims.
Please urge your representative to support this resolution in the interest of protecting religious minorities and freethinkers worldwide. Promoting secularism and the right to speak critically of religion is a universal win for freedom of speech and religious liberty.
