Currently, 30 states have no anti-discrimination protections for LGBTQ Americans. At every turn, the Religious Right is exploiting this loophole that exists in current federal civil rights legislation to achieve its vision of so-called religious liberty — the unfettered ability to discriminate under the guise of freedom of conscience.
The House of Representatives is slated to vote this week on the Equality Act, landmark legislation to close this loophole and ensure that the Religious Right can no longer weaponize religious liberty to neglect the civil rights of LGBTQ Americans.
From the Masterpiece Cakeshop decision, which considers businesses denying service to customers based on their sexual orientation, to the newly announced Department of Health and Human Services rules that allow doctors, pharmacists and and other professionals to deny care to patients because of their “sincerely held religious beliefs,” the rights of LGBTQ Americans are under attack by the Religious Right.
