‘Freethought Matters’ guest delves into origins of white Christian supremacy

Watch the teaser here.

The Freedom From Religion Foundation interviews for its Sunday TV show an expert pollster who in his new book excavates the roots of white Christian supremacism.

Robert P. Jones is the CEO and founder of the Public Religion Research Institute (PRRI), a nonpartisan, nonprofit group that does important work exploring America’s cultural, religious and political landscape. He holds a Ph.D. in religion from Emory University. Jones is the author of several books, most recently The Hidden Roots of White Supremacy: And the Path to a Shared American Future. Jones spoke about the book at FFRF’s 46th annual national convention last month in Madison, Wis.

“It is an audacious claim to have literally just set foot on a piece of land and to think that you’ve got the authority to claim it right without regard for who’s there or what else is going on there,” Jones explains to “Freethought Matters” host Dan Barker the pernicious Doctrine of Discovery by which the colonizers rationalized their grabbing of the Americas. “And when you think of what justifies that claim, it was because it was rooted in this idea that God had given them permission to do this.”

If you don’t live in the quarter-plus viewership of the nation where the show broadcasts on Sunday, you can already catch the interview on FFRF’s YouTube channel. New shows go up every Thursday.
