A co-founder of the Congressional Freethought Caucus is the guest on the Freedom From Religion Foundation’s “Freethought Matters” TV show this Sunday.
Rep. Jerry McNerney has represented the 9th district in California (the Stockton area) since 2006. He has a doctorate in math and after working on national security programs became chief executive of a turbine company, inculcating a lifelong interest in environmental issues. Not suprisingly, he serves on the Energy and Commerce and the Science, Space and Technology Committees.
“The important thing is that we base as much legislation as possible on reasoning and logic and science, that’s evidence-based,” McNerney explains to “Freethought Matters” co-hosts Dan Barker and Annie Laurie Gaylor in talking about the importance of the Congressional Freethought Caucus. “A lot of our policies can be advanced that would be based on those foundations. Also, there are legislative ideas that are proposed that would weaken separation of church and state. I think it’s important and incumbent upon the caucus to oppose that sort of legislation.”

And some weeks ago, the show interviewed Robert P. Jones, the CEO and founder of Public Religion Research Institute who is an expert on the intersection of religious and racial extremism.
