Santa Rosa County, Fla., is considering a proposal to adopt “In God We Trust” as the official county motto, adding the religious phrase to the county seal as well as every county vehicle and building. The commissioner advancing the proposal responded to a question about the exclusion of atheists by saying:
“I am keenly aware that it is impossible to do anything in my position that will be favored by everyone. My core values and beliefs stem from my faith, and my faith in Christ is what gets me through dark times.”
We need you to tell Santa Rosa County lawmakers that “In God We Trust” has no place on any county property, including buildings, vehicles or the official seal.
This proposal and others like it are thinly veiled attempts to peddle religiosity and equate patriotism with piety. They are about advancing the Big Lie that the United States was “founded on God” or Christianity, dismantling the wall between religion and government. The motto “In God We Trust” is inaccurate, exclusionary and aimed at brainwashing Americans into believing that our nation is a theocracy.

As a local resident, I oppose the proposal to adopt “In God We Trust” as the official county motto and to place the religious phrase on the county’s official seal, vehicles, and buildings.
The motto “In God We Trust” is inaccurate, exclusionary and aimed at brainwashing Americans into believing that our nation is a theocracy. Not only is the proposal to include this on county property unnecessary, the phrase itself is not representative of Santa Rosa County citizens.
The board’s time would be better spent addressing any number of actual pressing issues in our county rather than pandering to the Religious Right and creating unnecessary rules that force religion on our citizens under the garb of patriotism. Please oppose this measure.
