An up and coming legislator serving in the Freedom From Religion Foundation’s home state is the guest on “Freethought Matters” TV show this Sunday.
There’s a growing roster of state legislators who are openly secular — atheist, agnostic or humanist. Among these is Wisconsin state Sen. Kelda Roys, who was in the Wisconsin Assembly from 2009 to 2012 and was elected to the Wisconsin Senate in 2020 to a four-year term. Roys is also an attorney and the former executive director of NARAL Pro-Choice Wisconsin and ran for governor in 2018.
“Given how much entanglement we are seeing with religion and specifically a very right-wing brand of Christianity in the government, I think that a lot of progressive Christians and a lot of Jewish people and other minority religions, as well as nonbelievers and humanists, are very concerned about what’s happening with the Supreme Court and the increasing entanglement of government and religion,” she tells “Freethought Matters” co-hosts Dan Barker and Annie Laurie Gaylor. “And they want people who are going to stand up for constitutional values and the separation of church and state.”
