‘Secular Spotlight’ dives into community building with online personality Drew McCoy

The latest episode of FFRF’s “Secular Spotlight” has as a special guest Drew McCoy for a discussion on how to better build community in nonreligious spaces.

The Genetically Modified Skeptic explains why religious debate culture can do more harm than good, particularly when secular voices give powerful religious institutions control over their message. He explores how atheists and secular activists can build real-world community, strengthen secular institutions, and take control of their own stories rather than playing by the religious right’s rules.

“I thought that the way we would change the world was by getting enough people to agree with us that we would reach critical mass, and maybe not a majority, but at least a significant enough proportion of the population in the U.S., that we would inevitably come together and change the world,” McCoy states. “We have not gained any more power at all. I mean, I would say that we actually have less power than we had 10-15 years ago. That means that I’ve had to revise my thinking about where power really comes from.”
