Action Alert

Take action to save Egyptian man arrested for atheism!

Please take action today to help free a young Egyptian atheist, blogger and freethought activist!

This May, longtime activist Sherif Gaber was arrested at a Cairo airport while trying to leave Egypt and has not been seen since. Gaber is an ex-Muslim who has been harassed and imprisoned in the past for blasphemy, defense of the LGBT community and promoting science and atheism. This is the third arrest Gaber has endured, and although a post from his Twitter account claims he has been freed there is skepticism about who tweeted the claim.

Gaber is one of 28 civil society activists who have been accused of "wanting to undermine the Constitution, laws and national unity, as well as spreading false news in Egypt and abroad with the intention of harming national and economic interests." Nothing harms the interests of a nation more than persecuting people for exercising their freedom of conscience and expression of intellectual opinion.

Please tell the Egyptian government that criticising religion, God and the state are part and parcel of the right to free expression and conscience, and that atheism, apostasy and blasphemy are not crimes. Ask the U.S. State Department and Egyptian Embassy that and others detained for the exercise of their free expression be immediately and unconditionally released.

As a citizen of the United States, I am calling on the State Department to formally object to the imprisonment of Egyptian citizen Sherif Gaber for criticising religion. Please urge the Egyptian government to release Gaber from prison. This is a horrifying human rights violation and the United States must take action to save Gaber, whose crime was standing up for the ideals of democracy, free speech and secularism.

Sample email to the Egyptian Embassy:

I am writing to urge you to communicate to the Egyptian government the horror felt in the United States over the imprisonment of Egyptian citizen Sherif Gaber for voicing his opinions. Please take immediate action and pressure the Egyptian government to overturn the inhuman imprisonment of Gaber for his reasonable ideas. Any action possible must be taken to release Gaber.
