Calif. representative identifies as a humanist!

Thank lawmaker for representing reason in Congress!

Please give California Rep. Jared Huffman a warm round of applause for coming out as a freethinking humanist in Congress.

This morning The Washington Post that Huffman identifies as a “humanist,” outing himself as one of the only open nonbelievers in Congress.

“I suppose you could say I don’t believe in God,” Huffman told the Post. (He said he is a skeptic, but doesn’t identify as an atheist.)

Huffman also said that he thinks that there is too much religion in politics, and that it has been used negatively. We can say amen to that! Join us in saluting Huffman for his courage in coming out as a religious “None” and for representing freethinkers in Congress! We need more reasonable minds, like Huffman’s, making our laws.

Unfortunately, Huffman can only accept emails from his constituents. If you have a Twitter account you can tweet to the representative using his handle @RepHuffman. Click here to call the representative using our automated system.

You can also send an old-fashioned mailed letter to Rep. Huffman’s D.C. office expressing your support for his recent declaration! The address is:

1406 Longworth House Office Building
Washington, DC 20515

  • Thank you for your honesty, courage, and display of reason in coming out as a nonbeliever and humanist.
  • I wholeheartedly appreciate your support for secularism and representation of the freethinking community in Congress.
  • It is heartening to see a representative actually represent the enshrined ideals of our democracy by standing up for the separation between church and state.
