Sophia Winkler - Thomas W. Jendrock Student Activist Award – 2014

FFRF became acquainted with Sophia and her sister Collette when they were featured about three years ago on FFRF and the Triangle Freethought Society’s out of the closet billboard campaign.. Since then Sophia has starred in her very own expose, “Sophia Goes to the Good News Club,” directed by Scott Burdock.

She is only 16, was born to a non-religious family in a small town in Florida and moved to North Carolina in middle school. She's now a junior in high school in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Sophia is president of her school's women's a cappella group. FFRF member Thomas W. Jendrock has established a $1,000 student activist award for a worthy student who exhibits an atheist perspective which is positive, confident, introspective, constructive, optimistic and caring – as well as considerate and respectful toward individuals who do not share our non beliefs. We can’t think of a more worthy recipient of the Thomas W. Jendrock Student Activist Award.
