He started acting in 1981, when he was only 8 and later appeared in movies such as ā€œStand By Meā€ (1986) and ā€œToy Soldiersā€ (1991). Wheatonā€™s most famous role was as Wesley Crusher on ā€œStar Trek: The Next Generation,ā€ in which he was a regular cast member from 1987 to 1990, as well as returning occasionally as a guest star until 1994. Wheatonā€™s acting career continued with notable roles, including playing a recurring, fictionalized version of himself on ā€The Big Bang Theoryā€ sitcom, which aired from 2007-19.

He also does voice acting for animated television shows and video games, including ā€œTeen Titansā€ and multiple ā€œGrand Theft Autoā€ titles. He founded Monolith Press in 2003 and is the author of Dancing Barefoot (2004), a collection of autobiographical stories, and Just A Geek: Unflinchingly Honest Tales of the Search for Life, Love, and Fulfillment Beyond the Starship Enterprise (2005).

ā€œIā€™m an atheist,ā€ Wheaton proclaimed during an interview with the ā€œNerdistā€ podcast on Feb. 22, 2011. He described fan reaction to his personal ethical code, summed up as ā€œDonā€™t Be A Dick,ā€ saying, ā€œPeople started calling it Wheatonā€™s Law, and Iā€™m like, Iā€™m an atheist, but thatā€™s kind of like Jesusā€™ law. Itā€™s a good law.ā€ He elaborated on his views about religion on a 2006 blog post titled ā€œThe sins of the father,ā€ in which he wrote, ā€œI also have nothing but contempt for the so-called spiritual leaders who prey upon people for their own personal financial or political gain.ā€

Wheaton also described himself on his website as supporting ā€œfreedom from religion.ā€ He married Anne Prince in 1999 and adopted her two sons from a previous relationship.

ā€œIā€™m so fed up with being told that Iā€™m a bad person because I donā€™t subscribe to the same exact narrow views [Christians] have.ā€
