FFRF sent out an Action Alert in February asking FFRF'ers to contact members of the U.S. House of Representatives, opposing Rep. J Randy Forbes' resolution "reaffirming 'In God We Trust' as the official motto of the United States and supporting and encouraging the public display of the national motto in all public buildings, public schools, and other government institutions" (H. CON. RES. 13). This resolution, approved Thursday by the Judiciary Committee after intense debate, has now been sent to the full House for consideration. (Read the entire bill here.)
Rep. Forbes is founder and co-chair of the Congressional Prayer Caucus. He has previously tried to discredit out nation's first motto, 'E Pluribus Unum' ("from many [come] one"), claiming our nation's only motto is "In God We Trust." In fact, both are national mottos, and 'E Pluribus Unum,' which was originally chosen by a committee of Franklin, Adams and Jefferson, appears on the Great Seal of the United States and still appears on currency. The religious motto was unfortunately adopted following a religious lobbying campaign during the Red Scare in 1956. (See more background on In God We (Don't) Trust.)
Once again, freethinkers are needed to stand up for our secular nation and heritage!
Please ask your U.S. House representative (by phone, letter or email) not to support this resolution.
Feel free to copy and paste this message (or, better yet, use your own words):
"I object to Rep. Forbes' H. Con. Res. 13, which would encourage 'In God We Trust' postings in all public buildings, including places of government and public schools. As John F. Kennedy said, 'I believe in an America where the separation of church and state is absolute.' This resolution is a waste of taxpayer time and resources, and an underhanded effort to insert Rep. Forbes' god into government. Stand up to religious fanatic bullies in Congress and vote against this bill."
It would be great to make sure Rep. Forbes hears from many "godless" Americans who support our secular and godless Constitution.
You may also wish to make this the subject of a short, timely letter to the editor to your preferred local paper. Keep remarks short and succinct, concentrating on one or two points, and include your name and contact information.
Additionally, see below an opportunity to vote in an online poll about this resolution.
Please do not forward this Action Alert to members of the House or media. For maximum effectiveness, write as an individual and not as someone responding to an Action Alert. We are pleased to receive "blind" ("BCC") copies of your messages and correspondence by e-mail at
