Anthony Malkin, owner of the Empire State Building, is being called one of 2010's "knuckleheads of the year" by New York Daily News [Jan. 1, 2011] for refusing to light the building blue and white in honor of Mother Teresa's birthday last August (see FFRF Action Alert from last year supporting Malkin).
Instead of caving to major pressure from Catholic groups (like Bill Donohue's Catholic League) and those unaware of the "un-saintly" side of Mother Teresa (see previous FFRF Action Alert for details), Mr. Malkin decided to light the building to commemorate the 90th anniversary of the passing of the 19th Amendment granting women the right to vote.
Please send a letter to the editor to the New York Daily News objecting to their characterization of Malkin as a "knucklehead." Let them know you support Malkin for standing up to bullying by Catholic groups, and that you appreciate his decision to honor women and feminism instead. Mother Teresa, with her anti-choice ideology, was the opposite of a feminist!
You may also wish to thank Malkin, if you have not already done so. (See contact info below.) We are pleased to receive "blind" (BCC) copies of your letters and correspondence by e-mail at .
Keep letters to the editor brief, under 150 words, and include your full name, address and phone number. (This information will be used for verification purposes only.)
