Action Alert

URGENT ACTION NEEDED! Woman to be stoned to death!

Urge release of 43-year-old Iranian mother of two

UPDATE: Iranian officials appear to be responding to the international outcry against stoning Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtianti. They have not confirmed what sentence awaits her, but they have stated she will not be stoned to death. Please continue writing and pressuring the contacts below, asking that Iranian authorities release Ashtiani from prison. For updated information, see this BBC news story:

In 2006, Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani was accused by the Islamic Republic of Iran of committing adultery with two men, supposedly before her husband died. Sakineh, mother to a 16- and 20-year-old, says she was forced to confess after a brutal interrogation and has already received 99 lashes as a punishment for this alleged crime. She has since retracted her "confession," claiming it was made under duress. However, the Iranian courts have refused to grant her clemency, and now, after being kept from her children for four years, Sakineh faces execution by stoning, unless the international community intervenes. According to the Iranian penal code, she will be buried up to her chest and stones will be thrown at her until she is dead. Executions in Iran are announced at the last minute, so it is uncertain when she will be executed.

Please immediately send a brief message to Iranian leaders and President Obama requesting they do everything in their power to prevent the execution of Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani. Letters to top Iranian officials must be addressed "Your Excellency" (see below).

Please copy and paste the following message (or write your own) to the contacts listed below:

Please do everything in your power to halt the execution by stoning of Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani and grant her clemency. This woman has not received a fair trial. There were no public witnesses and she had limited access to her attorney. She has already paid for her alleged crime with a punishment of 99 lashes. Please immediately intervene to save this mother of two, and prevent a grave miscarriage of justice.

We are pleased to receive "blind" copies by e-mail at .
