FFRF prevents distribution of Ten Commandments at Ohio graduation (May 31, 2013)

The Freedom From Religion Foundation stopped an outside organization from distributing Ten Commandments plaques to students at the graduation ceremony of Fostoria High School in Fostoria, Ohio.

FFRF Senior Staff Attorney Rebecca Markert contacted Fostoria City Schools Superintendent Andrew Sprang on May 31, requesting that he protect students’ \ right of conscience and not allow the organization to distribute the Ten Commandments plaques.

The plaques also had a note that read “Jesus will save you” tied to them. Markert wrote, “It is unfortunate that some educators feel it is their place to instruct other people’s children on religious edicts.”

Sprang responded the same day that the district would stop distribution of the Ten Commandments plaques at the graduation, which took place June 2.
