The police department in San Angelo, Texas, agreed to remove a winter holiday display of a lit-up Latin cross from the top of their main building, thanks to the Freedom From Religion Foundation.
FFRF Senior Staff Attorney Rebecca Markert contacted the San Angelo Police Department in a Dec. 5, 2012 letter, after receiving a complaint from a concerned area resident about the display.
Markert noted that the Latin cross is an unmistakably Christian symbol that clearly violates the separation of church and state when displayed on government property. She asked the police department to stop endorsing Christianity by removing the Latin cross.
The San Angelo city attorney called on Feb. 12, 2013, to assure FFRF that the cross was removed in December 2012, and would not return in future holiday seasons.
