Draconian Periodical Rate Increase Affects Freethought Today, Small Publishers
April 20, 2007
Readers of Freethought Today are asked to join the nationwide protest being organized by publishers of small periodicals over the pending and punitive rate increase for mailing small-press periodicals. In the case of Freethought Today, which is sent 3rd class nonprofit (bulk rate), the minimum increase will go up nearly 62%! (Rates go up from there, depending on weight.) As The Nation points out, mega-publishers are getting "special favors," while the inequitable increase will "unduly burden smaller and independent magazines with much higher rates." Ultimately, these costs must be shared by subscribers and drain the coffers of nonprofits.
