Two Action Alerts

Write TIME, Educate Napolitano

February 3, 2005

Below are two action alerts:

Action Alert #1. Write TIME.

This week's cover story, "The 25 Most Influential Evangelicals in America: What Does Bush Owe Them? Do the Democrats Need More Religion" (Feb. 7, 2005) showcases an alarming collection of fundamentalists, who either have frightening access to Pres. Bush, or were apparently chosen for raking in a lot of "filthy lucre" marketing Christianity.

See TIME cover story here.

Have fun with this assignment! Please write:

Be very brief, and include your full name, address and home telephone.

Action Alert # 2. Write Arizona Gov. Janet Napolitano.

Public officials partnering with far-right evangelical groups to fight against the separation of church and state is an alarming trend. This week, it was reported that Arizona's Democratic Gov. Janet Napolitano, along with her Secretary of State and leaders of the Arizona House and Senate, have joined a friend of the court brief by the arch-right Center for Arizona Policy to promote Ten Commandments on Capitol grounds.

This brief goes before the U.S. Supreme Court in a case challenging a Ten Commandments monument on Capitol grounds in Texas. Napolitano and the Arizona Legislature are on record endorsing the continuing presence of a similar Old Testament marker on Wesley Bolin Plaza, near the Capitol in Phoenix. Arizona officials are openly aligning themselves with an anti-abortion, anti-gay, church-connected organization which does not believe in the separation of church and state!

Here is a recent news story on the development.

The Center for Arizona Policy website describes its mission in this manner:

"We battle organizations like Planned Parenthood, the ACLU and gay rights groups that seek to destroy traditional families and traditional moral values. We have developed strong bonds with friends like Arizona Right to Life, Crisis Pregnancy Centers, Arizona Families for Home Education, Alliance Defense Fund, and many others including local churches.

"CAP has been selected and endorsed by Dr. Dobson and Focus on the Family to be the Family Policy Council for Arizona. CAP is deeply grateful for Focus on the Family's support through the provision of research, promotion, materials, prayers and guidance."

Please write to protest this unsavory union between government and a religious-right organization, or to educate about why it is inappropriate for the Ten Commandments to be endorsed by our secular government:
